For centuries the folk masters of domestic crafts in the Ribnica valley have cultivated the tradition of making wooden products for everyday use in the kitchen and the household. For these the term suha roba (dry goods) became established, and they were already a much sought-after market commodity in the 14th century. In the 15th century the inhabitants of the Ribnica and Kočevje valleys obtained the right to sell their products across the territory of the Austro-Hungarian empire of the time.
In that time the pedlars became famous, who sold their products, bound into a pack, around the homeland, in the Alpine lands and in Dalmatia, and in trade they even cooperated with Africa and India. Warm-hearted wit, good humour and eloquence saw to it that for centuries the Ribnica pedlars were an important transmitter of the oral tradition of jokes, quips and satirical verses.
The tradition of woodenware making and pedlary is kept alive today by only a few individual makers, while the customs and traditions connected with this craft are revived as part of the by now traditional woodenware fair in Ribnica.
