Idrija lies in a basin in the Idrija hills, where the pre-Alpine and the karst worlds meet. As the oldest Slovenian mining town it grew alongside the mercury mine, which today, together with the mine in Almadén in Spain, is inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage list.
The rich history is revealed by The Town Museum in the Renaissance Gewerkenegg Castle, the tourist mine The Anthony Mine Shaft and technical heritage throughout the town. Idrija is also famed for its artistically made Idrija lace and for its culinary speciality, idrijski žlikrofi with protected geographical indication. Through the Idrija Geopark the paths lead past Lake Wild, the Rake water channel and the technical monuments of the former mine.
