Maribor, the second largest city in Slovenia, lies on the Drava between Pohorje and the wine-growing hills. Its oldest urban area is Lent, the former harbour by the river, where parts of the medieval walls with the Water Tower and the Judgement Tower have been preserved. On the façade of the Old Vine House grows the modra kavčina, which as the oldest vine in the world is entered in the Guinness Book of Records. The vine still bears fruit, and its story links Maribor with the viticulture of the Slovenske gorice and the Maribor hinterland.
From Lent the town streets climb towards Glavni trg with its town hall and plague column. Slomškov trg is marked by the cathedral of St John the Baptist, the building of the University of Maribor and the Slovene National Theatre Maribor. In Maribor Castle on Grajski trg the Maribor Regional Museum operates, while the former Jewish quarter has preserved the synagogue, one of the most important monuments of medieval Jewish heritage in Slovenia. The Minorite monastery on Lent is today the cultural venue with the Maribor Puppet Theatre and the auditorium.
North of the old centre begin The city park and the city's wine-growing hills Kalvarija, Piramida and Mestni vrh. On Piramida are the remains of the first Maribor castle, and the slopes below the viewpoint are covered with vineyards. Along the Drava run walking and cycle routes, while Maribor Island is a wooded river island with a long bathing tradition.
On the southern edge of the city rises Maribor Pohorje. In winter it is marked by ski runs, and in the other seasons the hiking trails, Bike park Pohorje and the Pohorje forests. The wider Pohorje conceals bogs, waterfalls and the Lovrenc lakes, while towards the east and north the wine roads continue with cellars and tourist farms.
Maribor's cooking brings together Styrian dishes, Pohorje ingredients and wines from the surrounding winegrowing districts. The Lent Festival, Festival Maribor and the programmes of the Slovenian National Theatre and the Maribor galleries complete the cultural image of the city. Browse the accommodation in Maribor, choose restaurants or wine cellars, and discover activities along the Drava, on Pohorje and among the vineyards.
