Maribor Pohorje

In the Slovenian mountain world Pohorje is a particularity, since it is the only silicate mountain range. Here is the only site of the rock chizlakite in the world, and Pohorje marble was known and exploited even by the Romans. The distinctive appearance of Pohorje is formed by gently rounded ridges, plateaus and relatively steep and furrowed slopes at the margins.
Because of the impermeable rock base, a densely woven water network of springs, streams and rivers has shaped the characteristic forms of the surface. On the levelled ridges the famous peat bogs with small lakes came into being; the best known among them are Ribnica Lake,  the Lovrenc Lakes and Black Lake.

Among the attractions of the Pohorje we count the planje, extensive mountain grasslands, exceptionally varied forest stands, giant trees and the great peacock moth – Europe's largest butterfly.
