Lent

Lent or Pristan is a part of the old town core of Maribor, beside the river Drava, which stretches from today's market by the Judgement Tower to the Water Tower. Here, where rafts and barges that floated timber from the Pohorje and Carinthian forests once landed, the corners of the town were already fortified in the 14th century.

In the 16th century the Judgement Tower was built up into a bastion, and it acquired its present appearance around 1830. The Drava bank with Lent once represented the central trading – port part of the town, while today it is a popular promenade and a place where numerous interesting events take place.

Among them the best known is certainly the summer Lent Festival, which turns the town into a lively cultural and social centre pulsing to rhythms from all over the world. A particularity of Lent is the over 400-year-old vine, which has become the symbol of the city of Maribor – the city of wine and the grapevine.
