Bovec lies in the upper part of the Soča Valley, squeezed between mighty peaks the Julian Alps in the west of Slovenia. It is renowned for the emerald-green river Soča and is today known above all as the capital of Slovenian adrenaline experiences, yet at the same time it remains a quiet mountain place with a rich history and stunning nature.

The river Soča is the heart of everything that happens here. In summer its clear, unusually green water attracts lovers of water sports, from rafting and kayaking to canyoning and fishing for huchen, while in summer the valley becomes one of the central European gathering places for lovers of white water. Along the riverbed run popular paths for walks and cycling, and a special experience are the Great Gorges of the Soča, a narrow defile that the river has carved into the rock. The Trenta Valley, which opens north of Bovec, is the true heart of the Triglav National Park. Here stand the Dom Trenta information centre and the Juliana alpine botanical garden, and along the river runs a maintained The Soča Trail, which accompanies the river all the way from its source. From the valley, paths climb towards the Vršič pass and into remote villages such as Log pod Mangartom, past emerald pools and waterfalls that visitors discover on foot or by bike.

The Soča valley also bears deep traces of history. During the First World War the Isonzo front ran through here, one of the harshest mountain fronts in history, recalled today by fortified the Kluže fortress, the remains of outposts and The Walk of Peace, which links the sites of the former battlefield. The historical heritage is best presented by the famous museum in nearby Kobarid, which has received international awards for the way it is arranged, and scenes from this battlefield have also inspired world literature. In the surroundings of Kobarid the picturesque Kozjak waterfall and the old Napoleon bridge over the Soča are also enchanting.

Experiences follow one another in every season: in summer mountain bikers are tempted by the descent from the heights, while in winter lovers of quiet set off on ski touring and tobogganing. After a day in nature, the local culinary offer is welcome; in the Bovec inns they serve dishes shaped by hard mountain life, among them the speciality of bovški krafi, a sweet filled with dried pears and walnuts, and among the protected delicacies there is also Bovec sheep's cheese. Because of its position the place is a popular starting point for discovering the wider Primorska region and nearby Italy.
