Since as early as 1215 a mighty fortress has watched over Škofja Loka, the town at the confluence of the Selška and the Poljanska Sora. The original castle, built by the bishops of Freising, was badly damaged in the earthquake of 1511.
They thoroughly restored it, added the castle chapel, and later built a new wing with a hall and connected it to the monastery with staircase buildings. Ursulines lived in the castle, there was a girls' school in it, and today the Loka Museum and the Postal Museum are housed there.
The collections of the Loka Museum present the historical, art-historical, cultural, ethnological and natural heritage of the Škofja Loka area.
