Who is to blame for this year's cold winter? The Carnival!
The Cerkno region is a small link in the chain of Slovenian pre-Alpine hills. Although remote from the great centres and events, it records a history of several thousand years. The Cerkno Museum is the only one that comprehensively studies its rich heritage. With its collections, exhibitions and other activities it enables visitors to recognise the cultural identity of the Cerkno region. By continually developing and expanding its activities, it significantly co-shapes the cultural life of this area.
Besides the temporary exhibitions which the museum prepares in accordance with its annual work programmes, two permanent exhibitions are currently on display. The permanent exhibition The Cerkno region through the centuries comprehensively presents (with the exception of the archaeological periods) the historical development of the Cerkno region. Although it was settled already in prehistory, the Cerkno region entered "real" history in the second half of the 11th century, when individual places are first mentioned in written sources. The exhibition follows the development within the various state formations to which this area belonged right up to the end of the 20th century. Photographs, documents and objects present selected segments from the administrative, economic and cultural life of the area.
On the fiftieth anniversary of the revival of the Cerkno laufarija, in 2006 we prepared in the Cerkno Museum a new permanent exhibition THE CARNIVAL IS TO BLAME! – A tale of the Cerkno laufarji. The Cerkno laufarji are among the better known carnival masked figures in Slovenia. Their speciality are the masks – wooden larfe, carved from lime wood, which in such a human-like form are not known anywhere else in Slovenia. On the basis of the collected documentary and photographic material we prepared reconstructions of the costumes and props for all 25 figures that the laufarji family numbers today. With photographs and records we also presented the history and the rite itself.
