When the estate with the mill and sawmill was still owned by the Trieste baron Rossetti, the housekeeper here was a temperamental woman who reportedly feared neither God nor the devil. Once she fell gravely ill, but would not even hear of a priest, so he, thinking that she would then be frightened of him, dressed up as the devil. But she grabbed her rifle and shot him…
Since then the farm that awaits guests at the foot of Nanos, where the Nanoščica stream winds lazily across flowering meadows towards the forest, has been called Hudičevec (the Devil's place).
That was also the first and last time that anything resembling the devil appeared here. To all who are on holiday at Hudičevec, always fresh, deliciously prepared dishes of all kinds are available from morning to evening. With excellent wines, which come from the other, sunnier side of Nanos, and with the merry melodies of the accordion, the evenings are even more pleasant.
A holiday on the farm requires quite a few days, since it is not possible in an hour or two to get to know the rich karst underworld (the Postojna Cave, Predjama Castle, the Škocjan Caves), climb Nanos, Snežnik or Vremščica, ride at Lipica, cycle, help with farm work and so on. You can also see the interesting collection of old objects gathered in the room where grain was once milled by Mrs Simčič, a Carinthian by birth.
