Upper Carniola covers the north-western part of the Ljubljana Basin and the alpine world made up of Julian Alps and the Karawanks. A large part of the high mountains is protected by Triglav National Park with Triglav, the highest Slovenian peak, and below the mountains lie the two lakes Bled and Bohinj.
Bled is marked by the island with its church and the castle on the cliff, and Bohinj by Lake Bohinj, the largest permanent natural lake in Slovenia. Kranjska Gora lies by the Pišnica valley and the road over Vršič, in the nearby Rateče is the Planica Nordic Centre. Kranj has an old centre above the confluence of the Sava and the Kokra, Škofja Loka a medieval centre with Loka Castle, Radovljica and the only preserved town moat in Slovenia and the Beekeeping Museum. Cerklje na Gorenjskem lie below Krvavec.
In winter, visitors are drawn by the ski resorts of Kranjska Gora, Vogel above Bohinj and Krvavec. In other parts of the year, hiking through the valleys and mountain pastures, cycling along the Sava and bathing and activities on both lakes come to the fore.
