LOJZE SPACAL (Trieste 1907 – 2000, buried in Škrbina), painter and graphic artist.

Lojze Spacal is considered one of the most prominent visual artists in the post-war Slovenian and Italian space and a globally established artist, who reached his creative peak in graphic techniques, above all in linocut and woodcut. He also worked in other techniques (oil, mosaic, tapestry, fresco) and in various mixed techniques (e.g. a combination of sculpture-relief and painting).

He inscribed himself as the artist of Istria and the Karst, since he drew his motifs from these two landscapes and reshaped them into his own visual language. He spent much time in his house in Škrbina on the Karst, where at his own wish he is also buried.

For his work he received a series of international and national (Slovenian and Italian) awards:

• The prize for graphic art at the biennial of contemporary art in Sao Paulo, Brazil (1953),
• the graphic Grand Prix at the Venice Biennale (1958),
• the prize of the Presidency of the Chamber of Deputies of Italy (1968),
• the Prešeren prize for lifetime achievement (1974),
• the Trieste Golden St Just (1977),
• the Golden Star of the SFRY (awarded by J.B. Tito in 1978),
• the gold medal of the Province of Trieste (1984),
• corresponding member of the SAZU (1987),
• the Jakopič prize (posthumously in 2000)

and numerous other awards for his artistic opus. He took part in numerous group and solo exhibitions in Slovenia, Italy and elsewhere in the world. He took part four times in the Venice Biennale and regularly exhibited at the Ljubljana Biennial of Graphic Arts.

His paintings and prints are part of numerous important gallery collections of modern art all over the world, and in Štanjel Castle a permanent exhibition of his works has been on display since 1988.

A wedding in Štanjel

In Štanjel Castle we offer you three basic arrangements of additional services, which we can change and supplement on request:

  Ordinary wedding: arrangement for a wedding in the Lojze Spacal gallery. The price of the wedding is 90 €.

  Castle wedding: A more lavish wedding with a reception by the count and countess, live fanfares and dancers. The price of the wedding is 400 €.

  Wedding in the Ferrari garden: An outdoor wedding*in the pleasant setting of the Fabiani park. The price of the wedding is 250 €.

The application procedure: Enquire** about the date and time of the wedding at the registry office. Send to Štanjel Castle a written application for the issue of consent for the use of the Ferrari garden for the wedding ceremony. The application should contain the details of the groom and bride and the day and time of the wedding. With the issued consent, finally settle the formalities at the registry office.

*In case of bad weather the wedding ceremony is moved to the L. Spacal gallery, and the monetary difference to the ordinary wedding is refunded.

**A wedding in the Ferrari garden is held once, exceptionally twice, per Saturday.
 

Some useful information about weddings in Štanjel

Weddings in Štanjel are conducted by registrars from the Sežana administrative unit. The record– the wedding application you settle at the registry office in Sežana or at the local offices in Komen, Divača or Hrpelje from three months to 14 days before the wedding, except for a wedding in the Ferrari garden, when the application for a wedding outside the official wedding premises is submitted up to 45 days before the day of the wedding.
