Log rafting

Rafting on the Drava River has a tradition of more than five hundred years. The first transports with rafts were for carrying soldiers and military equipment, while for the first rafts for transporting timber the sources give the year 1371. Trunks initially tied with withies were later replaced by larger and sturdier ‘šajke’ , which made it possible to transport larger quantities of timber and other goods over longer distances. The real flowering of rafting is the first half of the 20th century, while its decline after the Second World War is a consequence of the development of the railway.

The Carinthian raftsmen today sail the Drava only for tourist purposes, and a ride full of surprises and fun with the raftsmen is a unique way of getting to know the old customs.
