We begin cycling in front of the information office of the Tourist Society on Mestni trg (the Plac), in the centre of the old town core. We continue along Poljanska cesta (the regional road Šk. Loka – Gorenja vas) and after 1.5 km the signpost for Breznica pod Lubnikom and Gabrovo directs us right onto the old military road, which served for the construction and intended supply of the RUPNIK LINE and leads to Blegoš.
After 3.8 km we arrive at KOBILA, from where footpaths lead to Lubnik, to Stari grad, to Vincarje and to Škofja Loka. We leave the military road when we turn left (6.5 km) in the direction of ST LAWRENCE and then descend past MEŽNAR. Below the homestead, to the left (7.5 km), we ride along a path, first downhill and then steeply uphill to the little church of St Lawrence, 400 m away. In the pleasant surroundings, treat yourself to a rest!
We ride back along the path and at the junction turn left, steeply down along the winding road to the village of ZMINEC. Crossing (9.9 km) of the very busy road (!!!) Šk. Loka – Gorenja vas, along the old road left onto the main road and right towards Šk. Loka. Soon we turn right across the bridge towards the settlement of BODOVLJE and, still before the first houses, left, then we continue along a cart track on the right bank of the Poljanska Sora. The cart track, which is muddy in rainy weather and across which a spring flows, then climbs steeply onto a natural terrace and joins the asphalt road that leads to PUŠTAL.
At the second turn-off we head left and down to the Nace house (a cultural monument), past it and right to Puštal castle (a cultural monument), which houses the Music School. We recommend a look at the castle courtyard and the Devil's Footbridge!
We continue past the castle and at the junction turn right onto the road that leads along the right bank of the Sora River, then right past the chapels of the Way of the Cross 200 m up the steep slope to the little church of the Holy Cross on HRIBEC. Climb the steps and enjoy the view, since from here Škofja Loka is at its most "ophotogenic"?. Descent back onto the road, right, and at the start of the village of HOSTA left (15.5 km) across the bridge into the village of SUHA, where at the junction, in the middle of which a wayside shrine stands, you turn right to the church of John the Baptist, which boasts â€othe most perfect example of a painted Carniolan presbyteryâ€?, and was built in the middle of the XV century.
Past the church and at the top of the rise we ride right along a cart track down to the village of LIPICA. We go across a small bridge, then right and downstream along the stream. We ride across the bridge over the Sora River to GOSTEČE and at the junction left (19 km) to the village of SORA. Right by the place-name sign (Sora) we turn right past a chapel and after 300 m of climbing we come to the parish church of St Stephen, which is built in the Neo-Romanesque style and in which Valentin Vodnik and Franc Saleški Finžgar served. Below the church is the monastery of the Carmelite nuns. Looking out over the Sorško polje and the Kamnik Alps, treat yourself to a rest.
We ride around the church and along the other path down to the road, then right, through RAKOVNIK to GORIČANE (24 km), left across the bridge past the cellulose factory and beside the railway line, then across the overpass and left into SPODNJA and ZGORNJA SENICA (At the car showroom, left).
After the two settlements we turn left at the junction across the railway overpass (25.9 km) and after a few metres right towards RETEČE. (The railway line is on your right side and do not cross it!) Just before the church in Reteče ride right between two houses and then along a narrow asphalt road to GODEŠIČ. By the used-car dealership, crossing of the very busy road (!!!) Škofja Loka-Jeprca (28.8 km), then the route goes through the settlement and across an unguarded railway crossing (!!!) (29.5 km).
After 20 metres (three turn-offs) we continue along the left path through the forest and under the power lines, and reach a field (31 km). We ride straight on for a few dozen metres along a forest path and then right beside the forest, and after 500 m to the hunting lodge, where we will take a breather.
We continue past the hunting lodge and after 200 m turn left, first through the forest, then across the field towards the village of TRATA. Before the village we head right (33.8 km) along a field track and across a guarded level crossing to ŽABNICA. On the left we will notice Ajman castle, which is home to the Ursuline nuns.
In Žabnica you ride across the busy road (!!!) Škofja Loka-Kranj (36.3 km) left towards Škofja Loka, then follow the signpost for DORFARJE, CRNGROB and turn right (37 km) along the narrow asphalt road past the tree nurseries and the military training ground.
There follows a climb to the pilgrimage churc of the Holy Cross (39 km), which is known for the fresco of the Holy Sunday painted on the façade. We ride back along the path, by the inn a descent along a gravel road, and on the level we turn right (40.3 km) and on a gentle climb continue along a cart track to the village of PEVNO. Beyond the village we descend downwards and opposite the tennis court we ride right (41.3 km) along a cart track (after a few dozen metres right again) past a farm to the asphalted road which leads onto the Križna gora. To the left we head downwards, then upwards, at a shrine right, and at the junction with the regional road right towards the Selca valley. After 600 m we ride across the road (!!!) past the Pinus nursery garden to the Veštr mill (44.5 km). The mill was burned down during the Second World War and then partly restored as a monument to the fallen partisans. By the mill we turn left along a narrow path downstream on the left bank of the Selca Sora, ride steeply downwards past the hydroelectric plant and along a gravel road, then right across a footbridge past the tennis court into VINCARJE. We continue left along the asphalt road and after 250 m we set off right up the slope.
There follows 900 m of steep climbing, partly on asphalt, partly on gravel, up to the lonely Grebenar farm (47 km). By the farm we ride left, one last climb and then down to Loka Castle, in which there are a museum and a gallery, while in the castle chapel you can even take the leap into â€othe married stateâ€?. There follows a descent along the road, the crossing of the busy Poljanska cesta (!!!) and left onto Mestni trg to the starting point. The circle is closed; all that follows is the entry in the cycle route book at the information office of the Tourist Association.
