Slovenian mountaineers equipped the Triglav range with the highest Slovenian peak Triglav (2864 m) with mountain paths as early as the end of the 19th century and built mountain huts here, the first in 1895 in Vrata.
Important for the history of Slovenian alpinism, and still the most popular and most visited, is the North Face of Triglav. It counts among the mightiest alpine walls, and the greatest height difference is around 1200 metres.
In its western part it is steeper and technically more demanding, known among alpinists as the Sphinx. For the ascent of Triglav it is possible to choose various starting points, and all the routes are appropriately marked and secured.
