Ajdovščina, the green town in the centre of the Vipava valley, is at first glance a quiet, rurally dreaming town, safely leaning against the slope of Gora and comfortably stretched out in a fertile, Mediterranean-mild valley. But only at first glance. As if it had taken on the character of the torrential river Hubelj, beside which it came into being, Ajdovščina is a surprisingly dynamic, at times even impulsive town, full of creative life.
The history of the town reaches more than two thousand years back, to the time when the Romans first set up a road station by the cold Hubelj River and then built a mighty military fortress for the defence of the eastern borders of the Roman Empire. Within the Roman walls a compact medieval settlement with narrow streets later developed, which have been preserved to this day. The old town centre is rounded off by burgher houses from the 19th century, when the town was experiencing an economic flowering.
A rich industrial tradition has settled a high technical culture in the town. In Ajdovščina today there is no large industry; the town is renowned for innovative and enterprising companies. With numerous experts who come from all over the world, Ajdovščina today is acquiring a quite particular cosmopolitan touch.
