Soteska Castle

Where the river Krka has cut a markedly narrow and deep river valley, count Jurij Žiga Gallenberg had the magnificent Soteska manor built in the years from 1664 to 1689. Conceived as a rectangle with four single-storey wings with arcades, four corner towers and a special entrance tower, it was in Valvasor's opinion one of the loveliest in the land of Carniola.

Its economic power rested on the exploitation of the Rog forests, and the valley experienced its flowering in the middle of the 19th century, when a sawmill was also erected on the right bank of the Krka.

The ruins of the castle and the sawmill are arranged for visiting, and beside the castle, in the former castle farm buildings, the exhibition depot of the Technical Museum of Slovenia can be seen. The garden pavilion with the Devil's Tower also belongs to the castle complex.
