Predjama Castle

Beneath an overhanging rock face on the slope of Podgora, Predjama castle, the home of the robber knight Erazem of Predjama, is carved into the living rock, and it stirs the imagination with numerous legends and secrets. Behind the more recent Renaissance building from the 16th century, in a larger natural cavity, there are the remains of an older castle from the 13th century.

 

The stone steps that lead to the upper floors are hewn into the living rock, which in places also replaces the inner walls of the castle. In the castle an archaeological collection has been arranged, with objects found in the underground passages of Predjama.

 

Also exhibited is material about the castle's owners, hunting trophies, weapons and furniture, while a special treasure of the castle is a Pietà from the beginning of the 15th century.
