We begin the route in Šentilj and descend through the Dobrenje valley and approach the Pesnica valley, from where Maribor and Kozjak nad Pesnico can already be seen in the distance. We ride into Maribor along the old Dunajska cesta, which was once the most important route towards the Balkans and on towards the East. From Maribor a cycling link leads across the Slovenske gorice by way of Lenart to the river Mura. The Amber Cycle Route, however, continues past Hoče across the Drava field through the Rače Fishponds Landscape Park and alongside the Požeg reservoir. This part is one of the finer sections on the route, since both bodies of water are a true paradise for various species of birds and plants. The forest part of the route offers real relaxation, far away from the noise of cars. At the end of Sp. Polskava we turn towards the Pohorje and by way of Leskovec and Spodnja Nova vas approach Slovenska Bistrica, where at Bistrica Castle the marked section of the Amber Cycle Route ends.

The Amber cycling connection is one of the planned European routes that will link the coast of the Baltic Sea with the Adriatic. Onto Slovenian soil it joins from Austria at the Šentilj border crossing. At Šentilj we meet for the first time with Slovenske gorice, which undulate gently between the Mura and the Drava. For the climb we are rewarded with a beautiful view. Maribor is the main centre of the cycling region between Pohorje and the Mura. Here three main cycling connections cross. The Drava cycling connection, which then continues along both sides of the river Drava to one of the oldest Slovenian towns, Ptuj.
