Koroška lies along the upper course of the Drava, between Pohorje and the Karawanks. Peca and Uršlja gora are its recognisable peaks. It is a wooded landscape with Alpine valleys and a long mining and ironworking history that has marked the places along the Meža and the Drava.

Slovenj Gradec is a cultural centre with the Carinthian Regional Museum and the Carinthian Gallery of Fine Arts. Ravne na Koroškem are linked to ironworking, Mežica and with lead and zinc mining. The mine there is among the oldest in Europe and is today arranged for tourist visits by mine train or bicycle.

Črna na Koroškem lies below Peca, in which, according to folk tradition, King Matjaž sleeps. In winter the place is associated with a snow castle building competition. Dravograd lies at the confluence of the Drava, the Meža and the Mislinja, and the surrounding hills offer routes towards Pohorje, Uršlja gora and Peca. In the winter part of the year, skiing and other snow activities come to the fore.
