Ljutomer is the centre of Prlekija, which spreads across the north-eastern part of the Slovenske gorice hills. The place, with a winegrowing tradition going back centuries, has produced several well-known Slovenian figures, among them the linguist Fran Miklošič and the film pioneer Karol Grossmann.
Ljutomer is known for its trotting horses, as traditional trotting races are held every summer at the town's hippodrome. In the surrounding area winds the Jeruzalem wine and tourist road, which climbs between terraced vineyard hills, klopotec rattles and hospitable wine bars up to the picturesque Jeruzalem with well-known white wines and wide views.
