Kamnik is a medieval town at the foot of the Kamnik-Savinja Alps. Its old centre stretches between Mali grad, the Main Square and Šutna, a former craftsmen's street with a row of historic houses. On Mali grad, of the former castle complex a two-storey Romanesque chapel with a crypt has been preserved, which is regarded as one of the main symbols of the town.

Above the town stands Stari grad, first mentioned at the beginning of the 13th century. Because of its position it controlled the medieval trade route through Kamnik, and today it is a viewpoint towards the Ljubljana Basin, the Julian Alps, the Karawanks and the Kamnik-Savinja Alps. Zaprice Castle on the other side of the old centre is the seat of the Inter-Municipal Museum of Kamnik, which presents the history of the town, art and the alpine dairying heritage Velika Planina.

Šutna leads past the birthplace of the general and poet Rudolf Maister, the parish church of the Immaculate Conception of Mary and the Sadnikar museum collection. The Franciscan monastery holds a library with old printed books and the chapel of the Holy Sepulchre, designed by Jože Plečnik. Kamnik's industrial and craft past is also connected with the millraces along the Kamniška Bistrica.

North of the town opens the valley of the Kamniška Bistrica. By the source of the river stand Plečnik's royal hunting lodge and a mountain lodge, and in the nearby gorges of Veliki and Mali Predaselj the water has carved narrow rock passages. From the valley paths lead towards Kamniško sedlo, Kokrsko sedlo, Grintovec and other high-mountain peaks.

Velika planina is recognisable for its shepherds' settlement with oval huts, the Preskar museum, the chapel of Our Lady of the Snows and the summer cattle grazing. South of Kamnik lies Volčji Potok Arboretum with extensive park plantings, and to the east the Tuhinj Valley with Terme Snovik.
