Nova Štifta pri Ribnici is known for its famous pilgrimage church of the Assumption of the Virgin Mary. The sanctuary on a rise on the eastern side of the Ribnica plain was built at the commission of the Ribnica lord of the manor Jurij Khisl, because of the miraculous appearance of lights on the rise. The church has an octagonal design, and the façade is surrounded by a covered arcaded walkway.
Inside it a dome 20 metres high arches upwards, above which there is a bell tower with a Baroque cap. The interior of the church is adorned by three golden altars; in the main one there is a painting of the Assumption of Mary. In 1780 holy stairs were added to the church, painted by Anton Postl.
The architecturally exceptionally interesting building later became a model for numerous sacral constructions in Slovenia. For several years in a row a blessing of motorcycles and motorcyclists has taken place at the church.
