Metlika-old town centre

At the foot of the southern slopes of the Gorjanci, squeezed onto a promontory between the valleys of the Obrh and the Bojica, lies Metlika. Old streets and squares, burghers' houses, interesting façades, cast-iron balcony railings, beautifully carved doors and numerous markings on the buildings are only some of the curiosities we notice on attentive inspection. In Metlika castle the Bela krajina Museum and the Slovenian Firefighting Museum have their premises today.

In the castle park in front of the castle entrance the visitor is greeted by monuments to important men of Bela krajina, while the town hall and the commandery of the former Teutonic Order complete the town's lively appearance.

In spring Metlika comes alive with the Vinska vigred wine festival, while in summer the castle is the venue for well-established cultural events under the common title ‘Come to the castle in the evening’.
